HaptX

Haptic control of robot hands — from anywhere

Robots that resemble our human body shape and functionality — known as humanoid robots — present a wealth of opportunity in myriad industries. Professionals in healthcare, energy, safety, manufacturing, defense, and other fields that rely on human body motions and activities eventually will see the arrival of humanoid robots to tackle hazardous or costly repetitive tasks. Humanoid robots can have sensor-laden, articulated end effectors that resemble human hands and are designed to be controlled by a human pilot, much like how a puppeteer might work.

Roboticists integrate HaptX Gloves with piloted humanoid robots equipped with these end effectors to perform complex motions. Pilots wear HaptX Gloves to control robotic hands, grippers, and arms, enabling the operator to drive robotic interactions from any distance, and feel what the robot feels. This enables continuous, natural interaction and provides critical touch information to the operator.

AI Training: HaptX Gloves enable Imitation Training methods

For AI Training of humanoid robotics, HaptX Gloves G1 offer a powerful, cost-effective tool that enables operators to teach robots how to do something precisely and repetitively. One of the reasons for designing humanoid robots is to facilitate the transfer of manual skills.

Worldwide, world-class human-robot interaction

Sanctuary AI

Sanctuary AI, on a mission to create the world’s first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots for enterprise, selected HaptX Gloves to enable the human operators who pilot Sanctuary’s humanoid robot to feel the objects being handled.

Tactile Telerobot

Since 2018, HaptX has been conducting human-robot interaction research, involved in funded projects to deliver proof-of-concept haptic teleoperation systems for robotic AI training and control.

HaptX Gloves first were used in 2019 to control the tactile telerobot shown here, a system that transmits realistic haptics to an operator located anywhere in the world. Operators wear HaptX Gloves to enable precise, intuitive robotic control of the robot’s dexterous hands, which mimic human hand dexterity. These humanoid end-effectors contain specialized tactile sensors that transmit haptic feedback data to the operator’s hand with high accuracy, high speed, and low latency.

HaptX co-developed this system with Shadow Robot as part of a consortium funded by All Nippon Airways to advance what’s possible in haptics and robotics and to improve robotics control and AI training outcomes.
