How are leading retailers using VR to improve consumer engagement with their brand and their products?

At last month’s annual Augmented World Expo, HaptX was thrilled to showcase Lowe’s in our exhibit booth, and to collaborate with the VR wizards from Lowe’s Innovation Labs on an educational panel discussion: to share what’s possible with haptics gloves and VR, envisioned through the prototype Infinite Kitchen Touch, and to discuss best practices in multi-sensory VR development.

“We’re honored to see HaptX Gloves adopted as a tool by the world-class Lowe’s team.” – Joe Michaels, HaptX Chief Revenue Officer

Lowe’s Innovation Labs is part of Lowe’s, the Fortune 50 home improvement retailer. As an R&D organization, their team’s mission is to prepare Lowe’s, their customers and their associates for a future that will look very different than it does now: a future in which the physical and digital worlds become one – with abundant data, AI superpowers, and new interfaces at our fingertips. According to Josh Shabtai, Lowe’s Innovation Labs Senior Director, “We’re a team that is singularly focused on imagining, exploring and accelerating the future of home improvement. With Infinite Kitchen Touch, Lowe’s Innovation Labs is building on a portfolio of work centered around reimagining how our customers design their spaces in a physical/digital world.

Josh continues, “The kitchen is the heart of the home – and remodeling one is among the most gratifying yet challenging home improvement projects. Our customers often struggle to visualize how different elements will come together – which is critical in making informed decisions about materials, fixtures, and layouts. At Lowe’s Innovation Labs, we use emerging technology to create solutions that can take the friction out of customer problems — like this one.

“In the world of home improvement, the sense of touch can be essential in evaluating materials – cabinets, countertops, hardware, appliance finishes – assessing quality, and making informed decisions. But in a world increasingly driven by digital shopping experiences, our sense of touch is often neglected.

“This prototype takes us into an uncharted future: a world in which virtual environments can deliver physical sensation. It was built in-house by our team of designers and engineers, using Unreal Engine, and specially designed to take advantage of HaptX’s haptic gloves.”

Congratulations to our friends and colleagues at Lowe’s on this outstanding accomplishment! The advanced implementation of touch simulation by Lowe’s Innovation Labs offers a clear glimpse into the future of multi-sensory VR experiences for consumer engagement.
